My name is Moni. I was born in a small town in eastern India. I have spent 35 years of my life in this place as a student, part-time worker, primary school teacher and now a newly married wife.
Both my parents and in-laws are locals so this town is all that we ever needed. The unknown has always intrigued me. The desire to know what is the latest news or trend in the city has always interested me.
Being a small towner, am use to buying things that are low cost. But with the Jio internet services, now I feel to bring a bit of the city lifestyle in my daily life. Initially I was in a dilemma as I wanted to upgrade my electronic products but could not afford the ones being sold locally.
One of my childhood friend recently has started selling her embroidered Kurtis online with a company called Flipkart. They come and collect the product from her doorstep and it seems she gets paid regularly.
People don’t expect small town primary teachers to be tech savvy. Online shopping is the last thing on the list! Every town has few younger minds that start a trend. You can consider both of us as one among them. A bit ahead of time but completely rooted in our culture.
While I love to wear sarees, a bit of western touch during a picnic has always got me compliments. Mothers and aunties who generally seem very traditional are the first ones to encourage and motivate us to break the usual. To live a life that they always read in the newspapers or magazines but never thought was possible in our small town.
As India is changing, so is my small town lifestyle and so am I. Together taking a leap for a brighter and wiser young generation.
