Siya's shinning smile...

Updated: Sep 18, 2024

Our daughter is three and half years old. Just as innocent and cute she looks, equally witty and curious she is. My husband and myself think several times and prepare very hard before introducing any new rule in her life.

Siya is a master of lateral thinking. Which is just as good for her future organisations, but equally stressful for us as parents. Just like any other normal parents, we want to introduce all the right habits in her life at the right time. But whose turn is it going to be tonight?

After recalling the last bombardment of questions, I silently pass the buck on my husband. India had just won the T20 World Cup and Mr. is all energised and pepped up to be the forerunner this time.

Just the few times when I feel cricket is a blessing! “Siya from today, every night you have to brush your teeth before going to sleep.” Daddy says with ease and confidence. Oh! Dental is a difficult topic, she won’t have much of an excuse.

“But daddy I do it every morning? Is that not enough?”

“No Siya, good girls brush their teeth at night also”. Replied daddy with the “didn’t I tell you so” look. I was hesitantly pleased though.

“So daddy what happens when I brush at night? “Siya your teeth will shine in your dreams and fairies will be very happy.”

“Yeah! Which fairy will visit me in my dreams then?” Daddy starts jittering, thinking how many names do I know anyways?

Obviously hoping if he could pitch a cricketer’s name, but exclaims in excitement - “Cinderella Siya, your favourite!” “Daddy my story book says Cinderella is a princess?”

Guessing an lbw seemed easier than solving this fairy riddle. The somewhat lost daddy exclaims - Cinderella is fairy’s best friend. They will both visit you.” Mr. confident there can be no rebuttal to this one.

“Daddy my story book says Cinderella lives in a palace and fairies in sky. How did they become best friends?”

It’s been over 2 days since India’s victory. I should have taken this more seriously. Daddy sighs!

Exhausted already. Changing the topic seemed the only solution. So daddy exclaims : Do you know Siya what happens when you brush your teeth with Colgate tooth paste? No daddy! (Aah changing the topic was easier!)

“Colgate tooth paste makes your smile brighter. Now Siya will have the happiest smile ever.” But daddy, how will the fairies know I have the best smile? Phone call to fairies like you do to office?

A bit more exhausted daddy replies. “No Siya, we can’t call fairies. But Siya wants the biggest smile, isn’t it?”

“What will Siya do without fairies? You said they will come to meet me in my dreams.”

Oh! Did I start with that? Siya, just brush your teeth!

Daddy I want my fairies. Call them. Daddy gives up. At times the best decision is to wait until the kid grows up.

Good night Siya. You can brush tomorrow morning!
